Key terms from the public record, defined in plain English. Each definition is a working explanation of a term already used on these pages.

Public-record terms

Public Record: Documents and facts a third party can independently verify, such as court filings and published reports.
Primary Source: An original, first-hand document such as a court filing or an organization’s own published record.
Citation: A reference to a source that allows a claim to be independently checked.

Class Action: A lawsuit brought by one or more plaintiffs on behalf of a larger group with similar claims.
Named Plaintiff: A specifically identified party bringing a claim. Andrew Hillman was a named plaintiff in Hillman v. Ringleader Digital, Inc.
S.D.N.Y.: The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, where Hillman v. Ringleader Digital was filed.
Docket: The official record of proceedings and filings in a court case.
Privacy Litigation: Legal action concerning the collection or use of personal data.
